Book Review "The Hill Mynah in Thailand"

I Wayan Rosiana

This book are very interesting and useful for education especially for conservation and ornithology which is one of applied science in biology. This book is easy to understand and equipped with supporting data from a lot of research that has been conducted in Hill Mynah (Gracula religiosa) in Thailand.

The author began writing with the common topic starting from introduction about topography of Thailand and why Hill Mynah interesting to studied, species distribution and the habitat including nesting in Thailand. The next chapter author writing about geographical variation. This chapter are very interesting and explain relationship about different morphology between subspecies with different geographical variation. Followed by morphological variations in area contact and genetic variation in hybridization are very interesting for molecular biology researcher especially explain genetic variation not just caused from evolution process but from circulation gen between both of the original subspecies. The chapter 7 (demography of the variations) it is very interesting and clearly giving explanation about demographic changes and hybridization giving impact changing in this bird population. The next chapter, discuss about behaviors such as communication, reproduction and nesting success, mating system and reproductive behavior. In all of these chapters it is very clearly discussed and equipped with accurate data so that is easy to understand and interesting to read. In the next chapter, discuss about sex determination. In this chapter the author very well describes the differences between male and female birds including use DNA. In the next two chapters, it is an interesting chapter to read for bird keepers or people who work in conservation institutions, especially the breeding of these birds. In this chapter it is very clearly discussed about the process of developing birds in captive breeding and their disturbances such as the threat of parasites both ectoparasite and endoparasite.

From all of chapters in this book, my conclusion is very good for education and support conservation as a reference. Hill Mynah is one of species bird that found in Thailand and several other countries including Indonesia. This book is very useful as a reference for similar research that might be possible in other country where this bird was also found. Maybe this book will inspire biology students especially to research the Hill Mynah in their country.
